Preparing for Installation
Introduction
In the previous part, we followed the complete journey of designing a solar power system. We understood the customer's needs, assessed the site, selected the equipment, designed the electrical system and estimated how much electricity the installation was likely to produce. Now it's time to turn that design into reality.
It might be tempting to imagine installers arriving at a property, unloading the equipment and immediately beginning work on the roof. In reality, that's rarely how a professional installation begins.
Long before the first mounting bracket is fixed or the first solar panel is lifted into position, careful preparation takes place behind the scenes. The design is reviewed. The equipment is checked. The roof is inspected. Safety procedures are planned.
Only once everything has been confirmed does the physical installation begin. Good preparation doesn't simply make installation easier. It helps ensure the finished solar system is safe, reliable and performs exactly as it was designed to.
Reviewing the Design
Every installation begins by reviewing the completed system design. The installer carefully studies the roof layout, equipment specifications and electrical drawings prepared during the design stage. This confirms where every solar panel will be installed, where the inverter and other electrical equipment will be located and how the cables will travel through the building.
Any notes relating to roof access, structural limitations or areas affected by shading are also reviewed before work begins.
By understanding the design before arriving on site, the installation team can identify potential challenges early and ensure everyone is working towards the same plan.
The goal is simple. The system that is built should match the system that was designed.
Preparing the Site
Once the installation team arrives, attention turns to preparing the property. Vehicles, tools and equipment must be positioned so they do not obstruct access or create unnecessary hazards. The working area around the building is organised, allowing materials to be moved safely between the ground and the roof.
Before any equipment is installed, the roof is inspected for loose tiles, damaged roofing materials or anything that could affect the installation. Existing electrical equipment is also checked to confirm that it matches the information gathered during the design stage. Preparing the site carefully reduces delays later in the installation and allows work to proceed safely and efficiently.
Delivering and Inspecting the Equipment
The solar panels, inverter, mounting system and electrical components usually arrive on site before installation begins.
Each item is checked against the design documentation to confirm that the correct equipment has been delivered.
The installation team also inspects the equipment for signs of damage that may have occurred during transportation. Solar panels are stored upright in their protective packaging until they are ready to be lifted onto the roof. Electrical equipment is kept dry and protected from dust, moisture and excessive heat.
Although these steps may appear routine, damaged or incorrectly delivered equipment can lead to unnecessary delays and compromise the quality of the finished installation. Careful handling from the moment the equipment arrives helps ensure it performs reliably for many years.
Assessing the Roof
Before stepping onto the roof, installers confirm that its condition matches the assumptions made during the design stage.
The roofing materials are inspected for damage or deterioration, while the supporting structure is checked to ensure it remains suitable for the additional weight of the solar array.
Any unexpected issues, such as cracked roof tiles, corrosion or structural defects, are identified before installation begins.
The roof layout is then compared with the design drawings. This confirms that skylights, chimneys, vents and other rooftop features are located where expected and that sufficient space remains for the planned panel arrangement.
If significant differences are discovered, the installation may need to be paused while the design is reviewed. Good installers never force the design to fit the roof. Instead, they ensure the roof is suitable for the design.
Planning Safe Access
Working on rooftops introduces risks that do not exist during most electrical installations. Falls remain one of the greatest hazards faced by solar installers, making safe access an essential part of every project. Before work begins, installers identify how they will reach the roof safely and how they will move equipment without creating unnecessary risks.
Depending on the building, this may involve ladders, scaffolding, edge protection or temporary fall-arrest systems. Weather conditions are also considered. Strong winds, heavy rain or wet roofing materials can significantly increase the risk of slips and falls. If conditions become unsafe, installation work is postponed until they improve.
Protecting the people carrying out the installation is always more important than completing the job quickly.
Confirming Equipment Locations
With the roof inspected and access established, the installation team confirms where every major component will be installed.
The positions of the solar panels are marked on the roof in accordance with the approved layout.
The inverter location is checked to ensure it remains shaded, well ventilated and easily accessible for future maintenance.
Battery storage, if included, is assessed against the manufacturer's installation requirements, while isolators and switchboards are confirmed to be in suitable positions.
The planned cable routes are also reviewed to ensure they remain practical, protected and as short as reasonably possible.
Although the design has already determined these locations, confirming them on site prevents unexpected obstacles from affecting the installation later.
The Importance of Preparation
By the time the first mounting bracket is fixed to the roof, much of the most important work has already been completed. The design has been reviewed. The equipment has been inspected. The roof has been assessed. Safety measures have been put in place. Installation locations have been confirmed.
None of these activities generate electricity. Yet each plays a vital role in ensuring the finished solar system is safe, efficient and built to a professional standard. Successful installations are rarely the result of improvisation. They are the result of careful planning, thorough preparation and attention to detail before construction even begins.
